Today, the city has one of the most vibrant economies in the country and a population of around 330,000. Cluj-Napoca is an important academic, cultural, industrial and business center in Romania.
Among other institutions, it hosts the country’s largest university, Babeș-Bolyai University, with its botanical garden, the Technical University, founded in 1948 and University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Cluj-Napoca was European Youth Capital in 2015
Halfway through its year as European Youth Capital (EYC), Cluj-Napoca, in Romania is well and truly on the map as the youthful destination in Europe.
The European Youth Forum, which awards the title of European Youth Capital to one city each year, has recently been on a monitoring trip to Cluj in order to report on its implementation of the programme. The Youth Forum concluded that Cluj’s programme of activities is going well; approximately 1000 of the 1500 planned activities have taken place - so the organisers are ahead of schedule to implement the programme!
Cluj-Napoca European City of Sport 2018
Sport has always been an important dimension in the development of Cluj-Napoca, not only through the moral values it holds, but also for the healthy lifestyle it promotes. Both national and international events held in our city, alongside the state-of-the-art facilities destined for the citizens create, without any doubt, the proper environment for sports culture and the field’s development. This vision has not only brought tremendous sporting events in our city, but also, it helped Cluj-Napoca obtain the title of European City of Sport in 2018. Therefore, Cluj-Napoca became one of the European cities that promotes applied policies in sports. The continuous development of sports infrastructure transformed the city into a sports node, where the opportunity to attend high quality sporting events merges gracefully with the possibility of practicing sports in state-of-the-art facilities.
